Each March, communities across the country recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and voices of individuals with developmental disabilities while continuing to push for greater inclusion and opportunity.

The 2026 national theme, “We’re Here: Then, Now, Always,” introduced by the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), highlights a simple but powerful truth: people with developmental disabilities have always been part of our communities—and they always will be.

Recognizing the Past

For generations, individuals with developmental disabilities were often excluded from schools, workplaces, and community life. Families and advocates spent decades fighting for rights, visibility, and equal access to opportunities many people take for granted.

That advocacy led to meaningful change. Today, more individuals with developmental disabilities are living independently, pursuing education and careers, and participating fully in their communities.

Progress didn’t happen by accident. It happened because people demanded better.

The Reality Today

While important progress has been made, many individuals with developmental disabilities still face barriers to employment, housing, healthcare, and social inclusion. Awareness alone isn’t enough. Communities must actively create environments where people of all abilities are welcomed, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed.

The Arc of Acadiana and similar organizations work every day to ensure individuals with developmental disabilities have access to the resources, advocacy, and support they need to live full and independent lives.

Looking Ahead

The theme “We’re Here: Then, Now, Always” is more than a statement—it’s a reminder that individuals with developmental disabilities are an essential part of our communities, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Inclusion isn’t about making space for someone new; it’s about recognizing that they have always belonged.

When communities embrace that mindset, everyone benefits. Diverse perspectives strengthen workplaces, relationships grow stronger, and communities become more connected.
