March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month—a time to celebrate the diverse talents, achievements, and potential of individuals with developmental disabilities. Established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, this month serves as a reminder that people with developmental disabilities should have the same opportunities for success as anyone else. The observance calls on all of us to foster inclusive communities where everyone can contribute and thrive.
Why We Celebrate: Each year, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month helps raise awareness about the challenges individuals face and emphasizes the importance of inclusion. Despite the progress we’ve made, too many individuals with developmental disabilities still experience barriers to education, employment, and community participation. This month highlights the need for continued advocacy, education, and action to remove those barriers.
As our CEO, Cindy Leleux, states, “We believe in the value of people, no matter their abilities or disabilities, and we want to make sure that everyone has a chance in life.” It is this belief that drives our work at The Arc of Acadiana and fuels our commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities.
The Importance of Inclusion: When people with developmental disabilities are included in all aspects of life—whether in schools, workplaces, or social settings—everyone benefits. As Cindy Leleux also says, “Individuals with disabilities don’t usually feel uncomfortable around other people. It’s other people who feel uncomfortable around people with disabilities.” This truth serves as a reminder that true inclusion requires society to challenge preconceived notions and make space for everyone, regardless of ability.
